Investment Consultancy

Our investment consultancy services have been developed to meet the needs of small and medium sized pension schemes where often the cost of the advice is out of proportion to the benefits, in terms of increased return or reduced risk.

The economic downturn, recommendations of the Myners Report and the introduction of new, complex asset classes have all contributed to making pension scheme investment decision-making more complex and costly than ever before.

We have developed an approach that centres around:

  • Focus on the important issues and areas where most value can be added
  • Focus on specific circumstances of your scheme – no house view or one size fits all solution
  • No sitting on the fence – clear advice and recommendations
  • Fixed and predictable costs

It is important that funding and investment decisions must be considered together, particularly as schemes move from being net investors to being net dis-investors and therefore the timing of disinvestments and cashflows becomes much more important.

Trustees should periodically assess their overall investment strategy, taking into account their appetite for risk, the sponsor’s ability to support that risk (and its appetite for doing so), cashflow constraints and any potential ‘exit strategy’.

Once a strategy has been set, it is important that any changes to the current investments or managers, is implemented carefully to ensure that any transitional costs are minimised.

On an on-going basis, the success of the strategy should be monitored to ensure that the managers are performing in accordance with expectations and to identify any developments that might impact on the strategy going forward.

Our investment consultancy services include the following:

  • Strategic asset allocation reviews, focussing on how the assets and liabilities interact
  • Advice on different management styles
  • Transition management
  • Monitoring and reporting, including investment triggers
  • DC strategic investment advice, including analysis of member investment behaviour

This Company is not authorised under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 but we are able in certain circumstances to offer a limited range of investment services to clients because we are licensed by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. We can provide these investment services if they are an incidental part of the professional services we have been engaged to provide.

Working as a graduate for an intimate company like Atkin & Co has provided me with the opportunity to apply my numerate skills in a practical way, the confidence to develop my own techniques to tackle challenges and the skills to communicate with a wide range of people from Senior Directors to members of pension schemes. Atkin & Co is certainly a company that I hope to achieve great success with.
